                                                                                    Tree Planting Class For Beginners
                                                                                                                      As the saying goes, “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago.”  The second-best time is now. 

This workshop will cover the basics of sourcing trees, site selection tree choices and best practices for planting and caring for trees. If you want to plant a few trees in your yard or hundreds in your woodland, you’ll gain tips and tricks to help you succeed.

Please bring a pair of work gloves, if you have them, to use during the hands-on portion of this workshop. Dress for the weather, we will primarily be outside. This workshop is co-hosted by Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center, Cook County Extension and Cook County Soil & Water Conservation District.

SWCD Native Tree & Shrub Sale

Every year the Cook County SWCD joins the South St. Louis SWCD in offering a tree sale.  During this sale, a wide selection of native trees and shrubs are available for purchase at a reasonable price.  These trees are picked up by the purchaser in May.  Orders can be placed by sending a check and completed order form to the South St. Louis County SWCD or via an online order.  All online orders are subject to a 4% online convenience fee.

Thank you for your interest in our 2024 sale!  Here are a few tips and insights to make navigating our sale even easier.

Online sales are expected to begin February 12, 2024 at 10:00am.  If there’s a delay, we will communicate that via the South St. Louis County website.  Once active, customers can enter the online store using the button at the bottom of the page. The page will have real-time inventory numbers providing the best and quickest availability information.

How does the sale work?
1) Review tree and shrub descriptions to select the appropriate plant for your location
2) Place Order – online (scroll down for online store) or by mailing a completed form and check to the SWCD (found below)
3) Mark your calendar with your pickup date and location
4) Begin planning your planting so trees get in the ground asap!
5) Pick up your trees and have fun planting

After March 1, please check the updated website for availability before mailing in your order. You need not permanently reside in Cook or south St. Louis County to purchase trees and shrubs from us. Tree Sale trees cannot be resold.  We do not offer refunds or cancellations on orders.  If you need to make a change, contact the office and we will try to accommodate.

The mission of Cook County Soil and Water Conservation District (Cook SWCD) is to maintain soil and water quality in Cook County by fostering responsible land use and by controlling soil erosion and non-point source pollution. The Board will encourage local conservation efforts by providing educational, technical, and financial assistance for local land users.
